Polite' Britons died on Titanic | ||
More British passengers died on the Titanic because they queued politely for lifeboats, researchers believe. A behavioural economist says data suggests Britons in that era were more inclined to be "gentlemanly" while Americans were more "individualist". Women with children had a 70% better chance of survival than men in such an environment, he told the BBC. The Titanic sank during its maiden voyage in 1912 after hitting an iceberg, with the loss of 1,500 lives. David Savage, from Queenland University of Technology, studied the disaster to look at how people react in life and death situations. He said that in testimonies from inquiries in America and Britain just after the event, there were a lot of statements from women saying their husbands put them on lifeboats. They then "went to the back of the boat to have a cigar, to stand around and be chummy, while basically the boat went down." Mr Savage said: "There was one gentleman who was rather wealthy... who went back downstairs after he put his wife on the [life] boat... put on his tuxedo...went back upstairs and smoked... with the idea that if I am going die, I may as well die as a gentleman and well-dressed." 'Peak of society' The "unsinkable" ocean liner went down in freezing Atlantic waters during its voyage from Southampton to New York. As it sank, the captain, Edward John Smith, shouted: "Be British, boys, be British," according to witnesses. "The American culture was set up to be a more individualist culture and the British culture was more about the gentlemanly behaviour," Mr Savage says. "You've got to remember that this is the Edwardian period when to be a gentleman was the peak of society." Mr Savage also concludes that social norms such as "women and children first" were very strong in British culture and survived in such an environment. |

I came across with this article and sense a great disturbance in the force….
Apparently this article is saying “been a gentleman, he must sacrifice his life for the common good of the people around him” therefore this leads to a burning question ....is sacrificing his own life for the person he love (just like a candle) is a must have criteria of a gentleman?
Anyway the tips below would keep you guys’ mind thinking huh hahah XD
1) in the 16th century or the golden age (if that’s what is call haha)….it’s the era where many great inventions was created and it’s also the time where great conquest was 1st started (i.e Queen Elizabeth of The Great Britain ordered her commanders’ to start the world 1st international trade across continents)…meanwhile its also the era where many civil wars occurred (i.e The French Revolution, Civil war between The Britons and the peasant in the U.S etc…)
Now…soldiers in the 16th century was often regarded as the Gentleman Soldiers partly because soldiers at those time was only being equipped with a single rifle with a bag of “mini ball” (the bullet name), meanwhile soldiers are always ask to march towards the enemy frontline openly and are not allowed to break the line with their comrades nor even given the right to open fire until strict order by the captain to do so. …so ya imagine this…a line of soldier …marching towards the enemy line ….openly….. Meanwhile fears trembling down to their feet as they can see flashes of rifles and canons firing towards them…and the worse part is…they cannot evade the scene but to march …..and march…and march….and march…and ya ***BOOMMM*** they are shot….and ya THE END Muahaha XD…..
Comments: The soldiers in the 16th are regarded as gentleman warriors because (like a candle) they sacrifice their own life to fought in that suicide manner….(marching openly….) with the excuse of …sacrificing our own life for the common good of the country stability and prosperity…and yeah the other crappies there haha XD….so ya that’s how the name of Gentleman Warrior came about.
Don’t forget…the current soldier are not regarded as gentleman warriors because soldiers today are equipped with sophisticated weapons and have air supports n stuff when its needed…and the main thing is …soldiers today are not fighting in the suicide manner because they are allow to take cover….to open fire when they felt threaten….
2) yeah just like you all had read above…the Britons’ risk their life to ensure the woman and children go on board 1st (which I think is a right move and I would do the same thing too) …but ya…the problem comes when….after they have ensure their love ones were safe n stuff…why on earth these “gentleman” don’t find a way or at least try to find something to save their own damm life too?....why are they Sacrificing their own live by ernm…smoking at the back of the dock while the Titanic was sinking? Huh…that’s suicide right…just like a candle huh….
3) from my own experience in a failed relationship ….well X always tell me I am too defensive of myself because I would have something to support myself whenever there a claim on me….but hey is it wrong if the claims made by X was wrong…as like…I never even do that in the 1st place, while X heard those claims from some 3rd parties?....is it wrong or so ungentle man like if I just stand up for myself and explain those claims are nothing but a mythical claims created by some 3rd parties?...
So ya what is the right definition of being a gentleman…must a person just sacrifice their live (suicidal)
So ya ….the conclusion…...,is …….the formula for a gentleman are as below? …..
Suicide + Sacrifice = Gentleman
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????
So what’s your definitions of gentleman…any comments would be great “P hahah XD thankie pankie ya hehe V(^_^)
